Understanding Rabies

Rabies is a disease that is most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. Most rabies cases reported each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes but humans can acquire the disease as well if they are bitten by an infected animal.

Rabies is a serious disease that infects the central nervous system. It will ultimately cause a diseased brain and eventual death. Understanding the early symptoms of rabies and knowing when to seek medical attention is vital. Rabies can be tricky to diagnose because early symptoms are similar to the flu and include fever, headache, and general weakness or discomfort. As the disease gets worse, other symptoms appear that include confusion, partial paralysis, hallucinations, an increase in saliva and difficulty swallowing. Death usually occurs within days of the onset of these symptoms.

If you are bitten by a wild animal, you should immediately wash and sterilize all wounds and seek medical attention.

Wildlife belongs in the wild, not in or around your home. You can minimize the risk of rabies to you, your loved ones and your pets by discouraging wildlife from being near your home. Clean up any debris around your yard, don’t leave waste receptacles outside and remove any pet food dishes.
